As an honor to the name, the life, and the saving acts of Jesus Christ, these CHRIST+MONograms have been made to enhance our Christian heritage. Some of the symbols are as old as the catacombs and others have devel- oped through the ages, but each is a tribute to God's Great Gift to the world, a Savior, Jesus Christ, portraying the majesty and glory of the Father and the Son. The Chrismon free was originated in the Lutheran Church of the Ascension in Danville, Virginia, in 1957 by Frances K. Spencer.
The evergreen of the tree symbolizes the eternal life that Christ has won for us. The tiny white lights represent the Light of the World. The white of the Chrismon refers to our Lord's innocence, purity, and perfection; the gold to the glory and majesty of God and the Son of God.
-Wayne Taylor, Chair of Chrismon Project,
The Chrismon tree in the Myers Tower Room at First Presbyterian Church, Greensboro, N.C. has been decorated with the Chrismons pictured here since 1986. Mrs. Bethune's father, Dr. John A. Redhead, was senior pastor of this church 1945-1970.
Members of the original Chrismon committee are Rose Walker and Florence Liewelien. K. Bringle, Gwen Lowe, Pat Martin, Eleanor Baldwin, Almeria Watson, Harriet Tucker, and Stella Efird have also made Chrismons through the years.
Front cover: CROWN: Our Lord's Kingship. Also, a symbol of victory over sin and death, and His place of honor at the right hand of God. I Timothy 6:15; Rev. 1 A: I A; Romans 8: 34
As of March 2008 proceeds of $10,000 from the sale of this CD have been applied to the Habitat initiative in Greensboro, NC, where members of First Presbyterian Church have joined with other congregations to build 5 houses in 5 years; to date three houses have already been dedicated. Dick and Virginia Bethune, together with other members of the Music Ministry Staff and Pairs and Spares Sunday School Class of Blacksburg, Va., United Methodist Church, have produced 8 CDs which have generated almost $70,000 to date (2008) to Build a Habitat House with Art and Music in Blacksburg. A similar initiative began with the Central Shenandoah Valley Habitat for Humanity affiliate in 2006.
